History and Origin of the Chakma People

Please bear with patience. This article requires a clear and dedicated collection of references/resources before providing confirmed information to the visitors.

Unlike many other communities, Chakmas don’t have any exact records of their history and origin. In the absence of accurate records of their origin, several prominent Chakma historians and writers highlight their own viewpoints regarding the origin of the tribe.

It is accepted that their history written in Chakma language, called Bijag (Bijog or Bijak), describes their origin and chronological advancements. However, at times these records often conflict within their points, which interfere from gathering valid information about their origin.

With common knowledge, they are considered to fall under the Tibeto-Burman family category. There is another conflicting belief that Chakmas belong to the Shakya Buddhist dynasty, which has not been widely proved yet.
